Xavier and the X-Men went to Moscow, Russia to help the X-Men of the Soviet Union and the X-Men of the United States to get along, and Havok reconciled with Logan. Madelyne was angry at Xavier for keeping the truth about her and Logan from her, and the two were in the middle of a catfight when she was shot with an unknown substance. Madelyne and Xavier were both transported to a genetic research facility in Russia, where it was revealed that the woman who shot Madelyne was the Russian scientist, Dr. Neutron (Meltdown).[218] Makelyne was unconscious, and the X-Men rushed to her rescue, but the X-Men and the X-Men were unable to save her, and the Russian scientist used the technology to teleport away.[219] Logan, Havok, and Alex all felt guilty about Madelyne's death, but Alex stated that her death was one of those rare events, that they'll stop eventually. Havok met Dazzler at a celebration in Paris, where Dazzler announced that she was to be married to the celebrity, John Lynch.[220]

After the team's return to the U.S., the X-Men went to San Francisco where they helped the local team of X-Men set up a school for mutants and joined the X-Men. Xavier played the prominent role of the leader of the new team.

4. The Secret Weapon: Madelyne's spirit appeared to some of the X-Men and told them that she had already gone to the afterlife and that she would see them again one day. During a brief encounter with Logan, she told him that she was happy that he rescued her from the Russian scientist, Neutron, because he did not know what it was like to be a super-powered mutant.[221] After some time had passed, Mister Sinister was released from the Cerebro's holding tank and decided to take advantage of the loss of Madelyne, taking the opportunity to kidnap all the students the X-Men had brought to their school to be safe, and taking them to his own school where he sold them as slaves.[222] The X-Men, Sinister, and all of the students, both the X-Men and those that were taken by Sinister, were sucked into a black hole by the Cerebro and appeared in a different dimension.

Back in the U.S.A., Cyclops and Jean Grey were now showing signs of apparent amnesia due to their rebirth with the Phoenix force. After a brief conversation, Jean sent Logan to the X-Mansion to assist with the restoration of Cyclops. Once at the X-Mansion, Logan was able to recognize the mutant, even though it was not Cyclops. Logan then suggested that the team see if Wolverine could take on the role of leader, which was eventually accepted by the rest of the team. A few days later, the team was on their way to an island for a training exercise and as they were leaving, they came across the island's mutant population. After the team came to the island, they discovered that the island was a base for the Weapon X project.

Logan, on his own, fought his way to The top of the tower, where he fought and killed Weapon X, the Red Card and Anna. While fighting his way through the base, Logan was also able to rescue some of the mutant kids. 827ec27edc
