Fluorescence images of a typical colloidal drop were obtained after the experiment. Due to the sharpness of the confocal microscope, it was possible to observe the dynamics of crack formation and growth and to determine the growth rates of crack width and length. Figure 2a schematically illustrates the morphological changes of the colloidal droplet and the crack growth in the presence of a nonadsorbing polymer. In the initial stage of the experiment, air was trapped in the drop. This was followed by the formation of a capillary bridge, which resulted in the generation of a pressure gradient between the inside and outside of the drop. The pressure gradient drove motion of the colloidal particles to the surrounding air, where they swelled in response to the rapid evaporation of the colloidal suspension. The formation of a capillary bridge was observed only for the solvent, which is a clear contrast to the collapse of the colloidal particles due to the repulsive force from the monomer-adsorbed colloids. The solvent was distributed in the space between the colloidal particles, as shown in Fig. 2b. Air was not trapped in the space between the colloidal particles. At this stage, the crack began to propagate, resulting in the release of stress from the swelling particles. By keeping the high volume fraction of the colloidal particles, the drop was not completely dried before the crack reached the surface. The stress released by the colloids was distributed over a broad area of the drop, which resulted in the formation of a crack. The crack grew quickly and spread to the surface, as shown in Fig. 2c. The consequence of the crack propagation was the breakage of the drop, as demonstrated in Fig. 2d. The growth rates of the crack width and length were 0.22 mm min−1 and 0.06 mm min−1, respectively. These values were in agreement with previous reports on crack growth rates. The efficiency of the crack growth rate is surprising; a mere 0.22 mm min−1 is nearly five times as fast as reported previously14. The fast crack growth rate is a result of the high volume fraction of the colloids and the low-water vapour pressure of the polymer. The probability of crack initiation at the interface was relatively high, as demonstrated by the images of Fig. 2a–d. The side-by-side configuration of the colloidal particles was responsible for the generation of the crack in the interface of the colloidal particles.
