Drinking water on Margate Beach, which is part of the South Downs National Park, is of fair quality, but it is not potable. Using water of safe quality is a Sunday tradition of the town. Temperatures at Brighton Railway Station generally exceed 24 °C (75 °F) in summer and often drop to below 0 °C (32 °F) in winter.
There are guesthouses and a restaurant. Hadrian's Wall, part of Roman Hadrian's Roman wall built about 123 AD, stands for 350 mi (563 km) around the north and west, partly between England and Scotland. The Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Wall here runs through the North Downs, although it is not similar in appearance to the Wall of Hadrian. There has been much debate about the origin of the Wall standing roughly where it does. Some suggest it was built by the Britons, but opinion is divided as to how old it is. The Wall has a long history and in Roman times provided a front line against the Germanic tribes to the north. It also protected towns on the coast from attack. Iron Age defences, such as ramparts, are thought to be in other parts of the area.
In 1981, the village had a population of 1659.[205] In 1125, the Domesday Book reported that the village had a priest and four tillers, as well as a mill, and was owned by Count Herbert de Limeslei. In 1189, the mill was still listed and the priest had been replaced by a vicar. In about 1159 the end of the Hundred Years' War in England gave Horsham Roman control of the village. It remained within the hundred of Lewes until 1178 when it was transferred to the hundred of Pevensey. The current church at Horsham Place was built between about 1300 and 1360 and St Martin's was built in the 13th century. d2c66b5586
