Angus, was a New Zealand businessman and Member of Parliament. Biography Early life Born in County Tipperary, Ireland, he was educated in England at Kibworth-in-Gordano and Harrow. His father was Archibald Angus and his mother Elizabeth Sommers Harrison. Business career He began his business career by becoming agent for the South African Boer War, serving under Frederick Roberts. He spent time as the regulator for the New Zealand Insurance Company and in 1889 became managing director. He became a partner of the firm of C. J. Ockenden Limited in 1902. He also had interests in New Zealand, Australian, and English mines. Political career He represented the Dominion Party in the from 1881 to 1884, the Liberal Party in the, and and finally the Reform Party from to 1884, when he was defeated. In the 1902 election he contested the electorate in the House of Representatives as a Liberal and represented the electorate until he retired in 1917. During his time in the House of Representatives he served as a government backbencher for the first four years and then from 1907 held Cabinet rank as Minister of Industries and Commerce. He was also the first Director-General of the New Zealand National Bank, appointed in 1902, and then became its chairman in 1904. He was knighted for his services to commerce in 1912. The building that currently houses the headquarters of the New Zealand Police was opened in 1884. The police building with its turrets and decorative gables depicted in the first and last scenes of the film The Thin Man (1934) is the building depicted in the eponymous film. The building was the site of the assassination of Richard Seddon in 1906 by his son Frank Seddon. Personal life In 1867, he married Née Elizabeth Stephen. They had three sons and a daughter.
