The translation is missing a lot of details, but I will try to add more in the future. The translation is to some extent an experiment that I made for myself, and in all honesty, I'm not sure it is complete or good enough. It's the first time I've been translating (and writing) a script in English, and I'm sure I'll make mistakes as I continue on. Also, the game's original script is much longer than I translated and I probably didn't get a lot of details.
The story of lain is an intense psychological thriller. The gameplay is a dark science fiction simulation in which you play a character whose memories have been wiped. The game is very similar to the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The story is essentially two parallel narratives (the original story and an alternate story told by the main character). The player's job is to piece together the details of the missing memories to figure out what happened. To do this, the player must make a choice at certain points, and if the player makes the wrong choice, the game ends abruptly. The player can replay the game multiple times and see different endings.
One thought on the translation: The whole game was done by me and co-translator @wakakuyo. We started the translation on July 1, 2020 and finished on August 25. We had to deal with the entirety of the game's script being over ten thousand words. While the story is captivating, the lines are repetitive and there are a lot of character-related side-stories that don't seem to have a whole lot of impact on the overall atmosphere (the main character has trouble telling a friend that she's afraid of her boyfriend). As such, I translated and added a lot of the dialog and character-related side-stories to make it more compelling. But it's still only a small portion of the overall game.
For the reasons above, I've translated only a portion of the original script. Also, I included the subtitles that I made for the original game. I didn't make any attempts to adjust the timing or the voice acting. You'll find my translation below.
The serial experiments lain (seroslain) are a group of atypical psychological experiments into the nature of memory. The main character is a female psychologist (voiced by Aoi Miyazaki) who has been selected by the scientists for her ability to memorize and study people and events. The scientists have set up a series of experiments to test the hypothesis that emotions or “feelings” have an effect on memorization.
