But clearly that was just the beginning of a huge trend. There are more and more'music making' libraries available, which enable you to imagine yourself and your audience playing in a virtual orchestra of mixed instrumentation, and producing highly-impressive patches of'real' music that resemble each other. The city of Vienna has continued to develop its sample library, providing more than 560 individual samples in 16 different categories. And the latest big update sees the addition of eight new professional-grade instruments: a full Stradivarius violin, a cello with sympathetic strings and authentic bow action, and four 'historic' instruments so you can experiment with this software in a historical fashion: a double-bass, a viola da gamba and an early Renaissance lute. An ideal instrument for both making music and making historical discoveries. It's the Duke of Windsor, a number of villagers giving a marching display in a downpour and a solid double-bass solo supporting a quartet of violin, viola and cello leads, all sampled by one of the nature sounds from Vienna's main park, the Leopoldau. It's a wonderful selection of historic samples, but also a bit of a head-scratcher until you have Google Translate 'to your heart's content' to reveal every possible usage of the samples within. I won't list them all here, but if you have any strong interests in historical instrumentation or conducting, this library is a must. This second iteration of the library is already more than twice the size of it's predecessor, and contains more than double the instruments... At the moment, there are more than 90 instrument samples alone, but the number of categories has increased to 28, providing samples of door and window opening techniques, a grand piano sample with sympathetic strings, and lots of other possibilities. You'll start to see what I mean when you get stuck for something to play and find that while the cello sample is a bit too clean, the double-bass sample is a bit too dirty. Unrealistic, but more than half the fun. d2c66b5586
