Our original Wood Veneers series was released between 2008 and 2010 to great success. It is still the most complete and, in our opinion, best collection of wood textures on the market. But a lot has changed since then in the 3D visualization business. Unbiased rendering gained market dominance which lead to a much greater focus on physical realism in general. Even in real-time visualization, physically based rendering is now a common approach.

In light of this progress, Arroway Textures decided to take a popular collection of wood textures, Wood Veneers and add a completely new version of the collection. The result is another step forward in accuracy and realism. Key to this process was a change of rendering engine. We switched to unbiased rendering for the new version. We also took the opportunity to rewrite the wood texture support in a new and easy-to-use Python-based data structure.

In addition to the new veneers, we decided to stay within the same area of the forest where the Wood Veneers material collection originated. The new Arroway Textures Wood Flooring collection uses the same tree data that was required to create Wood Veneers.

The old Wood Veneers collection is the work of two people working in a single apartment. Today high professional capacities are only needed for complex effects as in the film industry.

As the demand for visual realism grew, the two creators of Wood Veneers had to bear the burden of the higher expectations of the professional and hobbyist users. The state of the art and the huge load on the rendering engines made it very difficult to continue.

Three years has passed since we started working on the new version of Wood Veneers. We work at a research university in Germany on a project that significantly influenced the collection. As described in his paper Numerous Mass-Lines.. d2c66b5586
